Neighboring: Ways to Connect with Your Local Community

April 01, 2026

It’s easy to feel connected to the world around us nowadays. We have our fingers on the pulse of events the moment they happen, can see what our friends and role models are doing daily, and can even stay in touch with people all over the globe with the touch of a button.

But when you put down the phone? Different story.

Life used to be full of ways to meet our local community face-to-face. But that doesn’t mean that those ways, or new ones, aren’t possible today. Having real in-person connections and relationships is just as important as ever, and knowing your neighbor as a person rather than just a name can help you help one another.

If you aren’t sure how to plug into the local community, here are some ideas:

  • Volunteering: Many local schools, libraries, food pantries, and churches need people to help. Meet people while helping others.
  • Sports: Join a recreational sports league and meet fitness-minded friends. Softball, pickleball, bowling, you name it.
  • Take a Class: Art, cooking, martial arts, woodworking, anything to learn skills and meet people with similar interests.

These are just a few ways you can get out and make real connections with people in your area. Find your way to get involved.

Life is more than just what is on a screen. We look forward to seeing you out in the real world.
