Bright Ideas: Insuring Solar Panels

March 10, 2025

I know what you’re thinking. “Finally, an email on solar panels!”

Okay, maybe not. But with the new Inflation Reduction Act now signed into law, many people will find solar panels a more affordable option for their homes.

In fact, there are incentives in place to make solar panels a regular part of American life and ignite an exciting new sector of our economy.

Here’s how they’re insured:

  • Owned Solar on the Roof - Panels on the roof of your home are usually covered by your homeowners policy. Success!
  • Borrowed Sun - Leasing your panels? The company may insure them for you, but some still put the responsibility on you.
  • Unusual Paneling - If you have an odd setup or some custom gear, you may need a specialized policy to protect it.

NOTE: Depending on your region, solar panels may not be protected against wind or hail damage. Also, some policies may have coverage limits.

While solar panels are easy to insure, a quick conversation will secure the protection you need. Enjoy the sun!
